Sardar Patel Cooperative Dairy Federation Limited: A Vision of Sahakar se Samriddhi
Eighty years ago, guided by the foresight of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, the farmers of Gujarat's Kheda district united to form a dairy cooperative to secure fair value for their milk and safeguard their livelihoods. This pioneering step gave birth to Amul, which has since evolved into the world's largest farmer-owned dairy brand, handling over 12 billion liters of milk annually and achieving a brand turnover of ₹90,000 crore (USD 11 billion). Today, over 36 lakh dairy farmers are proud stakeholders in this collective success
Extending this proven model of cooperative strength to every corner of India, the Sardar Patel Cooperative Dairy Federation Limited (SPCDF) has been launched under the visionary leadership of the Honorable Minister of Home Affairs and Cooperation, Shri Amit Shah. The new federation has been established under the Multi-State Cooperative Societies Act, with an initial capital of ₹200 crore, and represents a significant step towards realizing the national vision of "Sahakar se Samriddhi".
A National Framework for Inclusive Growth
SPCDF will enable more than 20 lakh dairy farmers from over 20,000 villages in 20 states to become direct members of an organized cooperative structure beyond Gujarat's borders. These states are:
- Jammu & Kashmir
- Himachal Pradesh
- Punjab
- Uttarakhand
- Haryana
- Rajasthan
- Uttar Pradesh
- Bihar
- Assam
- West Bengal
- Jharkhand
- Odisha
- Chhattisgarh
- Madhya Pradesh
- Maharashtra
- Andhra Pradesh
- Karnataka
- Goa
- Tamilnadu
- Telangana
The local village dairy cooperatives will become members of SPCDF alongside GCMMF and its affiliated milk unions operating outside Gujarat. This structure ensures that farmers receive equitable voting rights, fair milk pricing, access to modern input services, and the benefits of a democratically governed system.
The shareholding is designed to ensure that the core stakeholders remain the farmers themselves, supported by GCMMF's strong management, marketing expertise, and the operational strength of local milk unions. Together, they will anchor this national cooperative network, ensuring the flow of quality milk from village collection centers to consumers across India.
Empowering Rural Livelihoods
Through this expanded framework, farmers will benefit from assured milk procurement, improved veterinary care, enhanced cattle nutrition, and modern dairy practices. Investments in robust cold chain infrastructure, chilling centers, and efficient processing facilities will further strengthen quality standards and support the rising demand for safe, hygienic dairy products
The federation will also help implement government schemes, offer capacity-building programs, and promote the best practices in dairy management; all aimed at increasing productivity and income for small and marginal farmers. This cooperative effort exemplifies Sahakar se Samriddhi by placing prosperity and empowerment directly into the hands of rural families through collaboration, innovation, and transparent governance.
A Tribute to Sardar Patel's Enduring Legacy
The launch of SPCDF, coinciding with the 150th birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, is a fitting tribute to the architect of India's cooperative movement. By creating a national platform that expands the Amul model's reach, this new federation will strengthen India's rural economy, support millions of livelihoods, and contribute to building a healthier and more prosperous nation.
Guided by the vision of collective action and shared growth, the Sardar Patel Cooperative Dairy Federation Limited promises to usher in India's Second White Revolution — a testament to the timeless power of cooperation for prosperity.
